Because we get so many questions about Invisalign, we have put together some information to answer some of the Frequently Asked Questions.
Is Invisalign Treatment Right for Me?
Yes! Invisalign® is a perfect solution for both teens and adults looking for a virtually invisible method to create your beautiful smile! Innovative technology advances make it possible to fix most common teeth-straightening and bite issues, from simple to complex. Many of our patients have been told that they were not candidates for Invisalign. However, Dr. Taylor has handled hundreds of cases, and many times, these patients actually are candidates.
Many orthodontic issues can be corrected with Invisalign, including:
- crowded or crooked teeth
- spaces between teeth
- crossbite (when some of the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth)
- overbite (the upper teeth jut out over the bottom teeth)
- underbite (bottom teeth jut out over the upper teeth)
- open bite (the upper and lower teeth don’t meet)

What is the Treatment Process?
Beginning with a FREE consultation with our expertly trained doctors, we will provide a complete exam that includes digital X-rays (no goopy impressions or radiation!). We then design a precise, customized digital plan that maps the step-by-step process to achieve your beautiful new smile.
Should you choose to go forward with Invisalign treatment, your unique aligners will be created by your orthodontist and sent to Invisalign for the production of your trays. Once your aligners are made, they will be sent back to our office and we will provide them to you so that you can start treatment!
Is There Any Prep Work Needed Before I Start My Invisalign Treatment?
Yes, but it depends on your specific situation as to how much needs to be completed. If you have an overcrowding problem, you may need to have a few teeth extracted. If there is no overcrowding, then most likely the only prep work needed will be for Dr. Taylor to apply a few attachments, also called “bumps,” to your teeth. These small “bumps” are made of a composite material that matches your tooth color. They provide a grip for the aligners so that your teeth can move. This process is completely painless, and because the composite material matches the color of your teeth, they are virtually invisible as well.
How Do the Aligners Move My Teeth?
The treatment is a process of wearing a series of removable aligners that will gradually straighten your teeth. These clear, flexible plastic aligners are made of a patented thermoplastic material called SmartTrack®. Your clear aligners are designed to apply the right amount of force to the right place at the right time based on your treatment plan.
You will wear each set of aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, changing to a new set of aligners every one to two weeks, as directed by your doctor. Each set of aligners will gently and gradually shift your teeth into place, according to your specific treatment plan, until you reach your Perfect Smile.
How Will Wearing Invisalign Affect my Life?
Invisalign® aligners are virtually invisible. Others will likely not notice that you are wearing them at all!
Unlike traditional braces, the Invisalign clear aligners can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. As a result, you really have no eating or drinking restrictions, as is custom with traditional braces. Just remember to clean your mouth thoroughly after each meal or drink to ensure no debris can be caught between your teeth and the aligners.
In addition, if you have a special occasion, such as a wedding, job interview, or playing sports, the aligners can be removed. Just remember, for best results, the aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours per day.
It is possible to feel slight discomfort when beginning your Invisalign treatment because your teeth are being gently moved. This discomfort usually only lasts for a short time. Additionally, when you begin using the aligners, your tongue will need to get used to having the aligners in your mouth. You may notice a slight lisp until you are accustomed to them, which should take just a few days.
It is important to keep your Invisalign trays clean. Our office will provide you with instructions once your trays are delivered.
How Long Will I Have to Wear Them?
The length of treatment depends on multiple factors, like how complex your case is and how often you wear your aligners. Your doctor will determine exactly how long your treatment will take based on your specific needs. On average, Invisalign treatment time can be between 12 and 24 months, though you can start seeing results in a matter of weeks.
What Happens After I Complete the Invisalign Process?
Everyone is different, so Dr. Taylor and his staff will discuss with you whether you’ll need a retainer to prevent your new smile from shifting back toward its old position. There are many types of retainers, and we will help you decide which would be the best option for your particular needs. Usually, you will wear your first set of retainers full time, then Dr. Taylor may recommend that you gradually reduce how long you wear them until you only wear them at night.
What is the Cost?
In most cases, the cost of Invisalign treatment is similar to the cost of braces. Your doctor will determine the cost of your treatment based on how complex your case is and how many aligners you need. Remember, we start your process with a FREE consultation, so you will have a complete estimate of costs before you commit. We strive to make Invisalign affordable, so we offer the following:
